Hanke Shicun(韓客詩存) includes poems and writings made through exchanges between and by Joseon Dynasty's diplomatic delegates while in Beijing and Qing Dynasty's literators during the era of Daoguang(道光) and Tongzhi(同治).
The book have great value as a historical material in relation with literators' exchanges between Joseon and Qing in the modern times. There is more than enough necessity of research as most of the contents are not known to Korea.
This study focused on Hanke Shicun and reviewed on the exchanges via painting works between Joseon's diplomatic delegates and Qing's literators.
There were especially lots of painting-related exchanges as the delegation during the era of Daoguang and Tongzhi from Joseon repeatedly included Lee, Sang Jeok(李尙迪), Oh, Gyeong Seok(吳慶錫), etc., who were disciples of Kim, Jeong Hee(金正喜) and had interest and talent in painting. They exchanged Poems and essays related Painting(題畵詩文, A painting which includes a poem as well) as in the exchange of 「Bamboo(竹)」 gold-painting by Lee, Jeong(李霆) or 「Tianzhu Zhaitu(天竹齋圖)」 painting by Cheng, Zu Qing(鄭祖慶) or Changhe poems(唱和詩) via paintings as Lee, Ha Eung(李昰應) did, sharing the graceful hobby of a literator.
Sometimes, they sympathized together on literator's fidelity or Confucian value via paintings or shared agonies and consolations of the times. For example, lots of Qing's literators praised Kim, Jeong Hee's fidelity with the Poems and essays of related Painting, 「Sehando」 and Joseon's literators such as Park, Gyu Su(朴珪壽) made Painting Poems(題畫詩) praising the virtue of predecessors to Huang, Yun Gu(黃雲鵠)'s 「Wanzhenfuhutu」. Also, paintings were used as a tool for record and memory as in the cases of Yahuitu(雅會圖)'s (Paintings in an elegant society's gathering). Moreover, Joseon's diplomatic delegation and those painters of Qing such as Cheng, Zu Qing, Kong, Xian Yi(孔憲彛)and Wu, Jun(吳儁) continued to exchange and studied and committed to learning of painting technique and styles. These painting exchanges between the literators of Joseon and Qing Dynasties were of horizontal and voluntary ones based on mutual recognition and self- confidence on the literary and cultural standards and affected a certain influence to the painting community of Joseon in modern times.
