초록

헝가리 문학사에서 가장 수준 높은 작품들은 현대문학동인지 『뉴거트(Nyugat)』를 통해 발표되었다. 본고에서는 『뉴거트』제 2세대 작가인 마러이 샨도르(Márai Sándor)와 디리 띠보르(Déry Tibor)의 작품들 중 개(犬) 가 등장하는 작품을 비교 분석하였다. 마러이 샨도르의 『추또러(Csutora)』와 디리 띠보르의『니끼: 한 개의 이야기(Niki-egy kutya története)』에는 모두 개가 주인공으로 등장하지만 작품 속에 묘사된 개의 성격이나 새로운 주인과의 만남, 갈등, 이별 등의 묘사는 서로 상당한 차이를 보여준다. 마러이 샨도르 작품에 등장하는 추또러는 흔희 자본주의 사회에서 보여 지는 크리스마스이브의 자유로운 분위기 속에서 신사와 만나게 되고 삶을 통해 신사와 갈등 관계에 놓이게 되며 결국 신사와 개는 서로의 성격과 삶의 방식의 차이로 인해 더 이상 함께 할 수 없어 이별을 선택하게 된다. 그러나 디리 띠보르의 작품에 등장하는 니끼는 헝가리에 사회주의정권이 들어선 후 공포정치가 자행되는 분위기 속에서 언처(Ancsa)씨네 가족과 만나게 되고 서로 의지하며 살아간다. 그러나 언처씨가 비밀경찰에 체포되고 난 후 니끼는 일 년 동안 돌아오지 않는 언처씨를 기다리다 결국 죽게 된다. 두 소설 모두 개와의 만남, 삶과 갈등, 그리고 이별을 다루고 있지만 『추또러』에서는 주인공 추또러와 신사와의 갈등에 초점이 맞추어져 있다면 『니끼: 한 개의 이야기』에서는 사회주의 라고 하는 극한적 정치체제와 개인의 갈등 속에서 파멸되어가는 개의 모습에 초점에 맞추어져있다. 이들 소설이 모두 자유 와 저항 을 주제로 하고 있지만 『추또러』에는 서로에 대한 인식부족으로 인한 자기중심적인 자유와 저항이 나타나 있다면 『니끼: 한 개의 이야기』에는 사회체제의 상하관계 속에서 나타나는 강자에 대한 약자의 자유와 저항이 나타나 있다. 두 소설이 유사한 서사구조를 가지고 있지만 자유와 저항을 바라보는 이러한 관점의 차이는 2차 세계대전을 전후한 헝가리의 정치상황에서 비롯되었다 할 수 있다. 1932년에 발표된 『추또러』가 비록 급격한 정치 변화가 있기는 했으나 비교적 개인에게 있어서는 자유로운 헝가리 사회 분위기 속에서 쓰여 졌다면 1956년에 발표된 『니끼: 한 개의 이야기』는 2차 세계대전 후 헝가리에 들어선 철저한 감시와 인권이 유린됐던 사회주의 체제 속에서 쓰여 졌기 때문이다. 그러나 마러이 샨도르와 디리 띠보르는 자유로운 사회상황이건 통제된 사회이건 간에 자유와 저항은 생명체의 본성임을 주장하고 있다.

영어초록

The top-level works in Hungarian literary history were published in Nyugat, a Hungarian literary coterie magazine in the 20th century. The present study makes a comparative analysis of Márai Sándor’s and Déry Tibor’s novels in which ‘dogs’ appear. Dogs are protagonists in both Márai Sándor's Csutora and Déry Tibor's Niki: Egy Kutya Története, but the two works are quite different from each other in the dogs' personalities, encounter and conflict with new owners and separation from them. Csutora happened to meet a gentleman in a free atmosphere of Christmas Eve, which is typical in the capitalist society, came into conflict with him, and finally said goodbye to him on account of the differences in personality and life style. On the contrary, Niki came across Ancsa's family and lived with them in interdependence in the atmosphere of terror politics after the socialist regime came to power in Hungary. However, after Ancsa was arrested by the secret police, Niki waited for him for one year, but died without sharing the joy of reuniting. The two novels deal with the encounter, life and conflict with dogs and separation from them. However, Csutora focuses on the conflict between Csutora and a gentleman, where as Niki revolves around a dog that was ruined in the extreme ‘socialist’ political system and the conflict with its owner. The both works have ‘freedom’ and ‘resistance’ as their subjects, but Csutora shows the egocentric freedom and resistance due to mutual misunderstanding, while Niki illustrates the freedom and resistance of the weak toward the strong in the hierarchy of the social system. They have similar epic structures, but their differences in the attitudes toward freedom and resistance result from the Hungarian political circumstances around World War II. Csutora, published in 1932, was written in a Hungarian social atmosphere that went through steep political changes but was relatively free to individuals; Niki, published in 1956, was written in the Hungarian socialist system after World War II marked by stern surveillance and human rights violations. Nonetheless, the both authors maintain that freedom and resistance are intrinsic to living things, regardless of free or controlled social conditions.
