실코의 『죽은 자의 연감』에 나타난 반복으로서의 서사 (Narratives as Repetition in Silko’s Almanac of the Dead)

초록

본 연구에서는 미국 원주민 작가 실코(Leslie Marmon Silko)의 『죽은 자의 연감』(Almanac of the Dead)에 밀러(J. Hillis Miller)의 반복 개념과 벤야민(Walter Benjamin)의 스토리 개념을 적용하여 분석한다. 밀러는 『픽션과 반복』(Fiction and Repetition)에서 모든 반복형식은 두 종류의 것이 모순적으로 서로 얽혀있다는 가설을 세운다. 즉 서구사상에는 두 가지 형식의 반복 –플라톤식 반복과 니체식 반복-이 있다. 플라톤식 반복은 통일성(unity)을 강조하는 것이며 니체식 반복은 차이(difference)를 강조하는 것이다. 이 두 반복은 서로 얽혀있고 이 정 반은 뗄 수 없이 교차하며 (이야기를) 다르게 반복한다. 밀러는 이 반복 개념을 통해 의미 찾는 과정의 중요성을 강조한다. 다양한 여러 사람의 목소리를 인정하므로 비폭력적이고 끊임없는 소통을 하려는 것이 밀러의 반복이며 이것이 그의 윤리적 읽기이다. 『죽은 자의 연감』에서 지도와 욤(Yoeme)의 연감을 통한 스토리텔링은 밀러의 반복 개념과 같은 맥락에서 미국원주민들의 개인적 이야기, 역사적 이야기, 그리고 과거로부터 전달된 신화들을 다르게 반복한다. 밀러의 다시 읽기인 반복 개념과 실코의 스토리텔링은 단성적인 맹목을 드러내는 소통의 장을 찾는 윤리적 읽기이다. 본 연구는 밀러의 다시 읽기인 반복 개념과 실코의 스토리텔링이 저항보다는 차이의 인정을 통한 공존의 장을 지향하는 문학으로서의 글쓰기임을 분석함으로 윤리적 읽기의 실천 방안을 제시한다.

영어초록

Oral tradition and storytelling are among the key characteristics alighted upon in Leslie Marmon Silko's Almanac of the Dead. Together with J. Hillis Miller's repetition as storytelling, through this study I seek to discuss the meaning of oral tradition and storytelling and the ethics of reading as represented in Almanac of the Dead. Miller's main analytic device is the two kinds of repetition which he finds in the literary text. They are related to one another in a system of mutual implication and mutual contradiction. Each calls up the other, but it does not make sense to have more than one of them. Miller’s repetition leads to a time and space through which he reveals and explores human thought and personal, social, and historical experiences through the endless transfer of meaning. This study analyzes the repetition of Miller and the storytelling of Silko as an interaction between a literary work and criticism theory that can coexist through the recognition of difference rather than resistance,
