광주~대구간 고속도로 준공 기념 상징조형물 제작 연구 (A Study of the making of symbolic sculpture in Gwangju and Daegu highway commemorate completion)

초록

오늘날 상징조형물은 공공미술의 한 분야로서 상징적인 장소의 표지물, 도시환경과의 조화와 친밀감, 인간다운 삶을 만들어 낼 수 있다. 특히 도시공간 안에서 현대인들에게 가장 밀접한 상징조형물은 개인의 취향이나 일시적인 경제가치의 판단이 아닌 주변 환경을 아우를 수 있는 심미적, 공간 조절적, 실용적, 공공 예술적 표지물로서 작품이 설치되어야 한다. 따라서 본 상징조형물은 국내에서 유일한 2차로 고속도로인 88올림픽고속도로의 4차로 확장준공과 동서화합의 상징노선임을 기념하기 위한 전국 현상공모를 통하여 광주 방향에 있는 함양산삼골 휴게공간에 제작 설치한 것이다. 본 당선 설치작품인 ‘한마음 한 길’은 고속도로 이용객들이 친밀감을 느낄 수 있고, 주변 환경과의 조화와 화합이라는 창작의도를 토대로 작품의 디자인 프로세스와 실 조형물의 제작 및 설치과정을 체계화하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 상징조형물의 개념과 기능에 대한 이론적 고찰, 상징조형물의 유형을 세분화하여 조형성과 상징성의 특징을 분석하였다. 이를 기반으로 광주~대구간 고속도로 준공기념에 맞는 주변 환경생태조사와 함께 상징성을 연구 분석하였고 사람 인(人), 사랑, 심장, 인터체인지, 삼태극의 주제를 선정하여 동서화합의 노선을 상징화하여 표현하고자 하였다.
위와 같은 이론적 연구와 체계적인 작품구상은 아이디어 전개, 3D시뮬레이션, 축소모델링, 실조형물 제작 및 설치의 단계로 제시하였다. 광주~대구간 고속도로 준공기념 상징조형물인 ‘한마음 한 길’은 최종 결과물을 통하여 동서화합이라는 상징노선에 대한 준공의 의미를 담아 정체성을 확립시킴으로써 그 지역의 활성화와 랜드마크적 공공예술로서의 작품을 제시하였다.

영어초록

Today’s symbolic sculptures, a part of public art, symbolically represent the region and exhibit harmony and intimacy in an urban environment. Symbolic sculptures in the modern urban setting, in particular, are intimately related to people so that they must be public art works that embrace the surrounding environment considering aesthetics, space efficiency, and practicality rather than individual’s preferences or temporary economic value. Likewise, this symbolic sculpture at the Hamyang-Sansamgol rest area along the Kwangju bound lane of the Kwangju-Daegu Highway was designed and installed in such a way that it presents a symbolic meaning to the region. The Kwangju-Daegu Highway, formerly known as the 88 Olympic Highway, used to be the only two-lane highway in Korea. To commemorate the widening of the highway to four lanes and its representation of the unity of the East and the West, a national public competition was open for designs. The winning art work, titled “One Heart and One Route”, provides the sense of intimacy to the drivers. And the design process, production, and installation of the art work have been systemized based on the creation concepts focusing on the subjects of harmony and balance. This study broke down the theoretical considerations and types of symbolic sculptures to analyze in terms of characteristics of the sculptures and symbolism. Using that as the basis, the study further researched and analyzed the ecological environment and symbolism of the area suitable for the completion of the highway construction connecting Kwangju and Daegu. Subsequently, the research identified man, love, heart, interchange, and Samtaekuk (heaven, earth, human) as the thematic subjects to represent the unity of the East and the West. Theoretical studies and systematic works such as above entails a development process which consists of conceptual ideas, 3D simulation, model building, and manufacturing and installing the actual art work. The symbolic sculpture commemorating the Kwangju-Daegu highway construction, “One Heart and One Route”, conveys the East-West unity and establishes the regional identity. Furthermore, it is a public art serving as the regional landmark that revitalized the regional economy.
