The purpose of this study is to research middle school students' listening problems and to suggest how to improve their listening comprehension through the use of the audio-visual aids. The experimental group had been taught through audio-visual aids for 12 weeks. The data needed for this study was obtained by the questionnaires with 20 questions about the English listening. The data analyzing method was the t-test through the statistics program SPSS 12.0. The result is as follows. First, the mean score for the experimental group was significant higher than that of control group. Second, it was found that there were significant differences in the intermediate and low levels of English proficiency. Third, most of the students who were taught listening by audio-visual aids responded that they were more interested in and more satisfied with the listening lesson than the students in the control group.
From the results of this study, we found that the use of audio-visual aids were more effective in improving the students' listening competence than the use of the audio tapes.
