『荷齋日記』에 나타난 歲時風俗과 民俗놀이 硏究 (Study on the Traditional Seasonal Customs and Folk Plays Shown in 『Hajaeilgi』)

초록

『荷齋日記』는 司饔院 分院의 貢人이었던 池圭植(1851~?)이 1891년 1월 1일부터 1911년 윤6월 29일까지 20년간 거의 매일 쓴 일기로. 분원의 경영과 도자기의 궁궐납품 및 시장 판매 상황, 그가 직접 보고 듣고 경험했던 각종 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ사회상, 분원 일대의 향촌 질서, 세시풍속과 민속놀이, 일생의례, 가족관계, 일상생활사 등 다양한 내용들을 역동적으로 기술하였다. 지규식은 양반이 아닌 신분으로 『하재일기』에 의례, 세시풍속, 민속놀이 등 그가 행하거나 보고 들은 민속 관련 내용들을 기록으로 많이 남기고 있는바, 이러한 일기는 매우 드물다. 그러므로 필자는 민속분야 그 중에서도 특히 세시풍속과 민속놀이에 주목하였다. 본고에서 논의한 사항들을 종합 요약하면 다음과 같다.
세시풍속의 경우, 설날 차례 후 관성묘에서 제비를 뽑아 길흉을 점친다든지, 저녁에 연등을 다는 것, 정초 근친, 정월 대보름날 저녁 달구경 및 답교 등을 하러 나온 당시 한양 사람들의 모습, 그리고 경기도 광주 분원 주변 마을들의 무동들이 재주를 서로 자랑하고, 또 이들에게 수고비를 주었다는 내용, 매년 삼복 때 직장 동료들과 술과 고기를 먹고 돈을 나누어 주었다는 기록, 추석 차례를 설과는 달리 산소에서 지냈다는 사실과 기독교 입교 후에는 아들을 대신 보내 차례를 지내게 했다는 대목, 납일에 약수를 먹었다는 기록 등은 주목할 만하다.
민속놀이의 경우, 한양에서의 답교놀이의 실상을 짐작할 수 있다는 사실, 경기도 광주 분원 주변 마을들의 무동놀이의 모습, 산대패들에게 산대놀이를 하게 하려면 비용이 든다는 내용, 꼭두각시놀음 등은 참고할 만하다.
그러므로 『하재일기』에 나타난 세시풍속과 민속놀이는 내용이 다소 간략해 아쉬운 점이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한양과 경기도 광주 지역에서 당시 실제 행했던 세시풍속과 만속놀이를 엿볼 수 있다는 점에서 자료적으로 가치가 있을 뿐만 아니라 민속학적으로도 의미가 있다.

영어초록

『Hajaeilgi(荷齋日記)』, a collection of daily diaries, written nearly every day by Ji Gyu-sik (池圭植)(1851~?), a tribute arbeiter assigned to the official kiln of Royal Kitchen of Saongwon, during the period between January 1, 1891 and June (leap month) 29, 1911, describes a wide range of traditions, experiences and the lifestyles of people back then, including management of official kiln of Royal Kitchen office, delivery of ceramics to the royal palace and market circumstances, political, economic and social affairs he directly witnessed, heard and experienced, village order in the vicinity of the official kiln of Royal Kitchen, traditional seasonal customs and folk plays, daily rituals, family relations, and every life history in a vivid and dynamic manner. It is extremely rare for someone like Ji Gyu-sik who didn’t belong to the noble class to leave documentary records in his own Hajaeilgi that cover such a variety of folk culture related topics, including traditional seasonal customs and folk plays. Against this backdrop, I have specifically focused on traditional seasonal customs and folk plays out of those folk related topics. The conclusions of this study based on the information obtained from the diary are as follows.
When it comes to traditional seasonal customs, it is worth noting a number of events, including tell fortunes by drawing straws at Gwanseongmyo(Tomb) following the Lunar New Year's rituals, hanging lanterns in the evening, meeting close relatives in the beginning of new year, description of people in Hanyang enjoying full-moon view in the evening, performance of boy dancers in villages near the official kiln of Royal Kitchen and tips given to them, distribution of alcohol, meat and money among colleagues on three dog days in every summer, Chusoek rituals conducted at ancestor’s grave unlike Lunar New Year’s holiday, sending son to the ritual on his behalf after converting to Christianity and drinking mineral water on the Hunting Day.
In terms of folk plays, it is worth referring to several facts and findings, including ability to portrait the bridge crossing game in Hanyang, Mudong plays conducted in the villages around the the official kiln of Royal Kitchen in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, fact that it cost to have mask dancers to perform mask dance, and the puppet show.
Therefore, although a brief description of the traditional seasonal customs and folk plays in 『Hajaeilgi』 leaves something to be desired, the diary has its unique value not only as a material reference but also in folkloristic perspective in that it serves as a window to the world of traditional seasonal customs and folk plays at the time.
