<연구노트>여성의 행복과 성찰성, 정의감각 - 비판적 행복연구 방법론을 위한 제안 (Happiness of Women, Reflexivity, and Sense of Justice: A Critical Approach to Happiness Research Methodology)

초록

심리학적 행복연구는 행복한가를 묻는 단순한 조사방법에서 탈피하여 행복에 대한 개념정의와 측정에 이르는 정교한 방법론을 발전시켰고, 그리하여 세간의 평가와는 달리 한국여성이 한국남성에 비해 전반적으로 덜 행복하다는 사실을 밝혀내는 데 성공하였다. 그러나 동시에 그것은 한국여성의 행복과 관련해 충분한 설명을 할 수 있을 만큼 여성의 현실에 밀착된 측정도구를 발전시키지는 못한 것으로 판단된다. 여성은 젠더와 관련된 상이한 의사소통적 지식에 기초해서 남성과는 다른 행위전략과 정의감각, 남성과는 다른 언어를 구사하기 때문에, 여성의 행복을 설명할 수 있기 위해서는 그러한 젠더이해에 기초한 성인지적 행복척도가 필요하다. 남성의 생활영역과 남성의 감수성을 중심에 둔 언어로 행복측정을 했을 경우 여성은 개인주의와 대립되는 관계중심 또는 공동체중심적인 특징을 갖는 것으로 설명되지만, 여성의 생활영역과 여성의 감수성을 반영할 경우 여성들은 오히려 개인주의적 특성과 공동체주의적 특성 양자를 ‘조합하는 방식’에서 남성과 다른 특성을 보인다는 결과를 도출할 수 있다. 행복의 개별요인들 자체 보다 그것들의 구성에 중심을 두는 이러한 비판적, 성인지적 행복측정방법은 특히 ‘평등’과 ‘차이’라는 여성주의 딜레마를 반영함으로써 역설적으로 그것을 해결할 수 있는 방법론 개발을 위해 필요하다.

영어초록

Thanks to the theoretical definitions of happiness and the development of measuring scales, psychological researches on happiness have revealed that women are less happy than men in Korea. This result contradicts many survey results which are usually reported by mass communication. However, the psychological research methodology does not seem to be enough to explain which factors and which elements of happiness are involved in happiness and unhappiness of women. Usually, the gender stereotype that women are rather caring than individualistic in all areas of life is supported by the researches.
So I suggest that it is need a critical and a gender-sensitive approach to this research area. A critical approach means that we need to see an another side of the circulating stereotype, including the gender difference of caring and individualistic personality. For in some area, for example in a competitive education, women can be more individualistic than men, and vice versa, it seems depend on the areas and contexts of social interaction.
And for an critical approach, a gender-sensitive perspective can be helpful. So I suggest at first to dissolve the definitions of individualism and communitarism gender-sensitively into areas and contexts, and to find instead a gender-specific constellation of individualistic and communitarian elements. This approach can lead to a paradox of reflexivity or sense of justice, that is to say, to double possibilities of gender protest and gender conformity. And finally I suggest to develop a measuring scale of women's happiness which reflects on this paradox and uses a gender-sensitive language.
