Designing Curriculum for Participatory Culture Literacy in a Convergence Era

초록

The purpose of this study is to design a curriculum that nurtures Christian young people with participatory culture literacy to become “inspirational culture transformers” in a convergence era. Convergence is a paradigm including technological, industrial, and cultural shifts beyond simple devices or media appliances. Media literacy competence in a convergence era is to promote participation in the new community that emerges within a networking society. Though status and influence may vary depending on the participant, in a convergence culture, everyone can become a participant, so they must have the capabilities of judgment, negotiation, networking, collective intelligence, and distributed cognition.
The situated learning theory gives strong foundation to a curriculum design for participatory culture literacy which puts more emphasis on community involvement than individual expression. The capabilities of participatory culture literacy can be developed via practice, dialogue, companionship, collaboration, and connection. The process of participatory culture literacy development like this is not a simple individual course out of context, but a learning ecosystem where the learning components build a close network and actively communicate with each other with no line between the inside and the outside like a Möbius’ strip.
Media literacy education should align itself in the direction that expands the participation scope of the digital prosumers under collaborative governance based on continuing understanding about convergence paradigm. To allow this to happen, we have to have an ecological approach to media learning.
