초록

본 논고는 이기백 선생의 역사관과 한국고대사 연구의 성격 및 문제점을 살핀 것이다. 이기백 선생은 1970년대까지 식민사학을 비판하면서 민족의 주체적 발전을 강조하다가 1980년대에 재야사학자와 민중사학자들이 등장하자, 민족이나 민중지상주의 역사관을 비판하고 진리지상주의 역사관을 강조하기 시작하였다. 그리고 이것을 『한국사 시민강좌』를 기획, 간행하여 시민들에게 널리 전파하려고 노력하였다. 한편 한국고대사에 대한 선생의 전문적 연구는 신라 사상사와 신라 정치사회사 연구에 집중되었으며, 『삼국사기』를 비롯한 국내 문헌을 기본 사료로 활용하여 연구를 진행하였고, 일부 사상사 논고를 제외하고는 중국이나 일본 사서를 사료로서 적극 이용하지 않았다. 이로 말미암아 일부 역사적 사실의 해석에서 약간의 문제점이 드러나기도 하였다. 선생의 한국고대사 연구성과는 고대국가론이나 신라 정치체제 발전단계론으로 집약되는데, 전자는 고대의 국가체가 성읍국가－연맹왕국－중앙집권적 귀족국가로 발전한다는 내용이고, 후자는 신라의 정치체제가 上代 貴族聯合－中代 專制王權－下代 貴族聯立으로 변동되었다는 것이다. 현재 이와 같은 선생의 입론은 학계의 통설로 널리 수용되고 있지만, 그러나 성읍국가와 연맹왕국의 개념에 대한 보완이 필요하고, 중대를 전제왕권체제라고 이해한 것에 대해서도 논리적, 실증적인 측면에서 보완할 사항이 적지 않다.

영어초록

This study examined the characteristics and issues of Lee Ki-baik's ancient Korean history investigation. Originally, Lee Ki-baik had emphasized the independent development of the Korean nation with a critique of the colonial historical view. At the end of 1970's, Lee started emphasizing the truthfulness of historical view after the appearance of the historians out of the office and the people's historian with critiques of the racism and the historical view of people first. And he tried to propagate it through designing and publishing of the citizen's forum on Korean history.
At the same time, his professional researches of the ancient Korean history were focused on the Silla's politico-social history and the Silla's thought history. The research was proceeded with utilization of national documents as a basic historical material. He did not use the Chinese and Japanese historical material actively except a few study. This intention resulted several problems in interpretation of historical facts. Lee Ki-baik's research achievement can be summarized as the theory of the ancient state and the theory of the Silla political system's development phase. The former contains the meaning that the ancient states had developed in the order of the walled town state-the allied kingdom-the centralized aristocratic state. The latter contains the meaning that the Silla's political system had changed in the order of aristocratic coalition in the Early Period-authoritarian royal power in the Middle Period-aristocratic coexistence in the Late Period. At present, his argument has been accepted widely as a popular theory at the academic field. However, the concept of the walled town state and the allied kingdom need be complemented. Further, the understanding of the Middle Period as the authoritarian royal power must be complemented in logical and positivistic manner in many areas.
