자유연애의 이상과 파국 -염상섭의 「제야」를 중심으로- (The Ideal and Catastrophe of Free Love —Focused on Yeom Sang-sup’s 「New Year’s Eve」)

초록

1920년대에 연애는 계몽과 동의어였다. 근대적 주체의 자유연애는 구 가족제도를 포함해 개조해야 하는 낡은 도덕에 맞서는 실천행위였다. 문학에서 자유연애는 이광수의 「무정」이 제기했지만 염상섭 역시 이를 소재로 적지 않는 작품을 썼다. 그러나 염상섭은 이광수처럼 자유연애의 기수로 옹호되지 않았고 김동인처럼 노골적으로 신여성을 비난하지 않았다. 그는 이상을 이상대로, 현실을 현실대로 바라보는 ‘리얼리스트’의 감각을 유지하면서 성차를 초월하여 ‘개인’의 변화에 큰 의미를 부여했다. 「지상선을 위하야」에는 이러한 시각이 입센의 문제작 「인형의 집」의 노라를 해석하는 태도에서 드러나 있다. 그에게 노라는 ‘여성’이기보다 타협하지 않고 자아를 실현함으로써 개성을 표현하는 데 성공한 문제적 개인이었다.
「제야」(1922) 는 각자의 방식으로 ‘자유’와 ‘연애’를 실천하는 문제적 남/녀를 통해 이 문제를 ‘계몽의 실패'로 읽어낸다. 여기서 연애=계몽이 실패하는 큰 원인은 신여성의 상대가 기혼남이라는 현실에 있다. 여주인공 정인의 성적 방종과 기혼남 E의 속물성은 구가족제도와 패션화된 계몽이 낳은 자유연애의 괴물이며, E가 거느린 문화적 표상(잡지, 문학)은 E의 속물성이 태어나는 또 다른 기반이다. 그러나 노라를 닮은 구원자 A가 등장함으로써 계몽에 대한 계몽의 가능성이 열린다. 이로써 「제야」는 20년대의 자유연애를 경고하는 선구적인 작품이 된다.

영어초록

In 1920’s, love was a synonym to enlightenment. Free love of modern subject was an act of practice standing against the old morality that must be reorganized along with the old family institution. In literature, free love was first presented by Lee Gwang-soo’s 「Mujeong」, and Yeom Sang-sup also wrote quite a few works based on the material. Yeom Sang-sup has not been supported as a flag-man of free love like Lee Gwang-soo, nor has he criticized the modern girls quite strikingly like Kim Dong-in. He maintained the sensation of a ‘realist’ who sees the ideal and the reality as it is, transcending sex differences and giving a great meaning to the change in an ‘individual’. The analysis of Nora in 「A Doll’s House」 shows this apparently, as he thinks of Nora as an ‘individual’ of the people actualizing her identity and expressing her own personality rather than a ‘woman’.
「New Year’s Eve」(1922) is a work that expresses such point of view. Here, the cause of the love=enlightenment failure is in the reality that the companion of the modern girl is a married man. The sexual looseness of Jung-in, the heroine, and the vulgarity of the married man E are the monsters of free love caused by the old family institution and fashioned enlightenment. Also, the cultural representation (magazine, literature) of E is another foundation for E’s vulgarity. However, the appearance of Nora’s savior A who is just like her makes 「New Year’s Eve」the initiative piece of work warning the 20’s.
