가정신앙관련 종교체험 사례 일고 (A Case Study of Religious Experiences Related to Domestic Faith)

초록

흔히 종교체험이라 하면 무당의 신병체험(神病體驗)과 같이 전문적인 종교사제자가 겪는 영적(靈的)인 체험을 뜻한다. 그들은 종교체험을 통해 각종 신을 만나는 영적인 체험을 하거나 그밖에도 여러 가지 신비스런 체험을 한다.
그런데 반드시 무당이 될 사람이 아니지만 영적인 체험을 하는 경우가 있다. 현몽을 통한 체험을 하거나 우환을 겪거나 또는 실제 영적인 존재를 목격하기도 한다. 이러한 체험을 흔히 신비체험이라고도 하지만 종교성을 띤 영적인 체험이라는 점에서 종교체험이라는 용어를 쓰고자 한다.
이 글에서 다루고자 하는 내용은 일반인으로 종교체험을 한 경우, 특히 가정신앙과 관련된 종교체험을 대상으로 한다. 종교체험은 직접 가신(家神)에 버금하는 존재를 현몽하거나 때로는 목격하기도 한다. 그런가 하면 병이 나거나 운수 사나운 등 소위 우환이 지속된다. 따라서 가정신앙 관련 종교체험을 현몽을 통한 종교체험, 신적인 존재를 보는 종교체험, 우환을 통한 종교체험으로 나누어 그 사례를 소개하면서 그 처방에 대해서도 논의한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 종교체험의 의의를 논의한다.
종교체험은 유형에 따라 특징이 확연하게 달라지지는 않지만 다소 차별화되는 경우가 있다. 현몽을 통한 종교체험과 신적인 존재를 보는 경우 앞날을 예견하는 경우가 있다. 반면 가신으로 좌정할 것을 암시하는 현상은 현몽과 우환으로 나타나기도 한다. 사례에 나타난 현상을 바탕으로 의의를 다음과 같이 정리해 볼 수 있다.
첫째 형상화를 통해 각인시킨다.
둘째 앞날에 대한 예견을 한다.
셋째 가신으로 좌정하는 계기가 된다.
넷째 길흉화복을 조절한다.
다섯째 온전하게 모시지 않음을 질타한다.
전반적으로 볼 때 종교체험은 가신신앙을 신빙할수 있는 기반이 된다.
이 글에서는 사례를 소개하고 처방에 중심을 두었기 때문에 분석적인 해석에까지 미치지는 못한다는 점을 밝힌다. 종교체험 사례는 필자가 그동안 가정신앙 현지조사를 통해 얻은 내용이 중심을 이룬다. 여기 소개되는 종교체험 사례 이외에도 다양한 종교체험 사례가 있으리라 본다. 따라서 이 글에서 소개하는 사례는 선별적인 자료일수 있다.
오늘날 가정신앙이 약화된다는 말을 흔히 한다. 심지어 ‘단절’이라 말을 쓰기도 한다. 하지만 설사 의도적으로 단절시킨다 하더라도 종교체험이 존재하는 한 가정신앙은 단절이 될수 없다는 점을 덧붙인다.

영어초록

Religious experiences generally mean spiritual ones felt by shaman priests like the shamanic initiation disease undergone by novices before they become shamans. Through these religious experiences, they contact gods and spirits, and do other mysterious things like curing illnesses and predicting the future.
However, there are other people who undergo spiritual experiences though they are not shamans. They have strange dreams in which something or someone appears, face a lot of misfortunes-worries and illnesses, or actually witness spiritual beings. These experiences are called mysterious ones, but they are spiritual experiences with religious tinges. So this study uses the term of religious experiences for these experiences.
The cases dealt with by this study are concerned with religious experiences which non-shamanic people undergo and which areparticularly related to domestic faith. In these religious experiences, the people concerned witness some god-like beings second only to the family deities in their waking time or in their dreams. They may fall sick or have misfortunes happen again and again. Religious experiences related to domestic faith are divided into three:experiences showing something or someone through dreams, experiences which witness deity-like beings, and experiences that have misfortunes happen. The study presents some cases and discusses solutions for them. Based on these discussions, the study examines the meanings of religious experiences.
Though the types of religious experiences do not have greatly different characteristics, they show more or less significantly different features. Experiences showing something or someone through dreams, and experiences in which deity-like beings are witnessed mostly enable the people concerned to predict the future. The intimation that the person who experiences spirituality should be set as a family deity is shown through dreams or misfortunes. The meanings of religious experiences shown by the cases can be summarized as follows.
First, religious experiences give a shape to what is intended and imprint it.
Second, religious experiences enable the person concerned to foresee what is going to happen.
Third, religious experiences can be a process for the person concerned to be set asa family deity.
Fourth, religious experiences can control “Gil, Hyng, Hwa, Bok(good, bad, misfortune and fortune)”.
Fifth, religious experiences may be phenomena to punish the person concerned for not being treated well.
On the whole, religious experiences are the ground on which people base domestic faith.
As this study focuses on the presentation of cases for religious experiences, it falls a little short of an analytic interpretation of them. These cases are largely from the field studies of domestic faith made by the author. There are many other cases of religious experiences than those mentioned in the study, which may be more selective.
It is commonly said that in these days domestic faith is weakened. They even say thatit is extinguished. However, even if people try to extinguish it intentionally, it cannot cease as long as religious experiences exist.
