Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 8-4, 523-545. The purpose of this study is to account for the distribution of will and be going to in terms of pedagogical grammar within the three dimensional grammar framework of Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999). My explanation is based on the analyses of the data from the corpus-based study of Biber et al. (2000) as well as the data collected from best-selling American fiction. I argue for some differences between the two forms with regard to context, while Azar (1999) claimed that these two forms have the same meaning regardless of context. Finally, five factors are suggested to determine the use of will and be going to in a given context.
