In this course, we studied the poetry of Park Yong-rae who emerged into the inner circle of Modern Literature in 1956. We referred to the articles of previous research in relation to the characteristics and historical context of Park's era. We pointed out the areas of interest and descriptions of old literary traditions that have been neglected and in some cases, forgotten. We also concentrated on the tendency to remove attention from the importance of historical writings due to the trends of modern civilization. We found that a main theme of Park Yong-rae's poetry derived from the disposition and inclination towards the search for self-identity.
In particular, we focused on the consciousness of daily life in connection with the tolerance of emotions, concise poetic style and spatial structure from Park's earlier period to his latter poems. Park Yong-rae thoroughly eliminated congenital emotions and sentimentality in his poetry, and instead relied on irony. His poetic attitudes derived from a pure artisan spirit and this self-inspection lent austerity to his work. In his unpublished work from the 1950s, Park Yong-rae exposed the maudlin sentiment accompanied by loneliness and nostalgia in addition to the abstract concepts of surface structure. Park held his methods in check using simple poetic forms and by freely celebrating physical and juxtapositional images. At the end of his career, his poetry concentrated on more extreme methods, even going so far as to experiment with verb and particle usage. We, however, referred to specific passages showing such poetic methods could bring about ambiguity and debate.
In Chungcheong Province, Park Yong-rae is regarded as the vanguard of late representative poets. However, we prefer to find the real value of his poetry in the genuineness of his lyricism. We conclude that his inherent sensitivity, his moderation in feeling, a delicate sensibility, and a use of daintiness carved out and polished the language, and opened a new Korean poetic horizon.
