The concepts of traditional images of masculinity furnished male Americans with a illusionary image with which they can identify. The purpose of this thesis is to study the flip side of the dreams of material success in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross. Their plays present a very negative vision of American society. In their plays, the fulfillment of individuals’ dreams are only remotely possible in American society. Glengarry Glen Ross is about a group of real estate salesmen whose company has imposed a ruthless regimen. The salesmen’s own fraudulent activities, by contrast, in deceiving their customers, are regarded simply as a good business, sanctioned by the ethic of a world in which success is a value and closing a deal an achievement. Death of a Salesman is also about Willy Loman’s life, death and his failure to make his dreams come true in American society. He accepts ideas of material success and physical and emotional strength and independence as his masculinity. So he wants to escape from their families which suppress his masculinity. The cause of masculine identity confusion will be observed through an analysis of these plays.
