빅데이터의 문화론적 비판: 미셀 푸코의 생정치 개념을 중심으로 (Cultural Critique of Big Data: in the Perspective of Michel Foucault’s ‘Biopolitics’)

초록

이 글은 탈근대 디지털 환경에서의 데이터 성격, 통제사회, 생정치의 관점에서 각각 빅데이터의 지식-권력 체계, 주체화의 효과, 인구의 문제를 분석한다. 이 세 영역에서 나타난 현상을 정리하면, 첫째, 지식-권력의 차원에서 빅데이터는 가상 공동체 내지 가상 사회의 구성원들의 모든 것, 그들의 존재와행동을 데이터로 환원한다. 외형적으로 자율적이며 능동적인 디지털 네트워크 이용자들에 대한 새로운 통제 양식으로서, 순수하고 투명한 지식임을 자임하고, 참여자들로 하여금 지식의 공개성과 협력 및 연결성을 강조하면서 자발적 혹은 무의식적으로 산출된 이용자 데이터를 치밀하게 수집, 처리, 활용하는 통치력을 발휘한다. 이 과정에서, 둘째, 주체성의 차원에서 데이터 주체는그들의 시간과 기억이 통제되며, 자신의 비물질 노동 결과 산출된 데이터에대해서도 접근과 활용이 구조적으로 제한받게 된다. 만인의 데이터화, 그럼에도 데이터 주체의 소외, 착취, 포섭이 동시에 작용하는 모순 상황이 곧 빅데이터 현실이다. 셋째, 인구의 집합적인 차원에서 볼 때, 빅데이터 상황에서는 상대적으로 현실의 질서로부터 자유롭게, 일종의 무정부상태에 있었던 가상 공동체 및 가상 사회 구성원들이 거대하고 정교한 자본과 국가의 데이터베이스안에 포섭되고 통치되는 양상이 나타난다. 이 현상은 가상 인구의 탄생을 의미한다. 디지털 인구는 신자유주의적 디지털 자본주의의 경제 질서 안에서,그 지배적 논리에 적합한 기업가적 주체들을 배양한다.

영어초록

The current research analyses big data in the respect of knowledge-power, society of controls and biopolitics. Three points are made. Firstly, regarding knowledge-power, big data reduces everything, every human’s existence and act into information.
Apparently autonomous and free digital users are enclosed into big data knowledge system. Big data is claimed to be transparent and pure knowledge, emphasizing the users’ collective participation and collaboration in the operation of big data. The governance of big data is yet found in its collection, modulation and appropriation of human data. Secondly, the human subject is reduced to free laborer in the social factory. Human time-memory is under control by big data system. Furthermore, access and use of their own data is structurally restrained, leaving the free laborer alienated from big data system. This is the reality of big data in which the exploitation, alienation and appropriation of human data is comprehensively and expansively deployed. Finally, big data invents virtual population, by means of enclosing digital users into a nation ― capital controlled system. In the virtual population, human population is recontructed to homo oeconomicus.
