이 논문은 최근 많은 사회적 주목을 받고 있는 ‘동료 생산’에 관한 문헌 리뷰를 통해, 동료 생산이 현대 사회생활의 조직 방식 변화에 어떤 의의와 한계를 갖는지 탐구한다. ‘인지 자본주의’, ‘네트지배 자본주의’, ‘벡터 자본주의’, ‘네트워크화된 정보경제’ 등과 같은 관념들은 동료 생산 모델이 현대 자본주의 생산에 갖는 급진적 의미를 강조한다. 모듈화와 미세화에 바탕을 둔 동료 생산의 분산성은 다양한 기술적, 법적, 문화적, 조직적 통합 메커니즘에 의해 뒷받침된다. 비독점, 비시장, 공유 원리가 확산될 것이라는 낙관론이 등장하고 있지만, 동료 생산이 오히려 시장 생산을 강화한다는 비관론도 적지 않다. 시장 친화성을 분명하게 밝힌 오픈 소스 운동의 분기, 동료 생산을 압도하는 웹 2.0 사업의 팽창, 지적 재산권 기한 연장 등과 같은 흐름이 비관론의 주요 근거이다. 임금 관계, 기업 위계, 시장 논리로부터 자유로운 생산 방식을 지향하는 동료 생산이 영리 기업들의 강력한 ‘공유 경제’ 구축의 지렛대로 활용되고 있는 것은 심각한 역설이다.

영어초록

By reviewing literatures on peer-production, this paper examines the significances and limitations of peer-production in reorganizing contemporary social life. The modularization and granularity are two key elements that make possible distributed peer-productions. Integrating mechanism of peer-production consists of motivation, peer-review, instant correction, sanction, legal measure, meritocracy, formal governance institute, and leadership. Although many optimist argue that the principles of non-proprietary, non-market, and sharing will be prevalent in today’s networked information economy, many pessimists warn against the commercialization of peer-production and the resultant strengthening of capitalist system. The reason for the pessimism comprises such elements as the forking of open source movement that showed its market-friendliness, the dispersal of web 2.0 business model that overwhelmed peer-production, and the extension of the intellectual property. It has not been empirically supported that new social relationship based on the principles of non-market, non-proprietary, and sharing will grow beyond market logic.
