미국이라는 나라는 ‘멜팅포트’라는 말로 표현하기 좋은 나라이다. 이는 다양한 이민자들이 미국이라는 한 나라에서 합쳐지고 섞여서 통합된 전체를 형성했다는 의미이다. 미국인의 특징으로는 타고난 근면성과 낙관적인 태도, 계급의식의 부재 등을 들 수 있다. 벤자민 프랭클린은 미국인들이 지녀야 할 덕목들을 제시했는데 이는 절제, 침묵, 질서, 결심, 검약, 근면, 성실, 정의, 중용, 청결, 평정, 순결, 겸양의 항목들이다.
