Ecological stability is the ability of an ecosystem to resist changes in the presence of perturbations. It has been the governing theory that there is no (simple) relation between stability and diversity. It is possible in nature to find very stable and simple ecosystems, and it is possible to find rather unstable, very diverse ecosystems.
Reactions of ecosystems to perturbations have been discussed widely in relation to the stability concepts. However, this discussion has in most cases not considered the enormous complexity of regulation and feedback mechanisms. The stability concept resilience is understood as the ability of the ecosystem to return "to normal" after perturbations.
Resistance is another widely applied stability concept. It covers the ability of the ecosystem to resist changes when external factors are changed.
