Ecological engineering is “the design of sustainable ecosystems that integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both”(Mitsch, 1996, 1998). This is a slight variation of the definition we gave in the late 1980s(Mitsch and Jorgensen, 1989) when we defined ecological engineering as “the design of human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both.”
In a word, ecological engineering involves creating and restoring sustainable ecosystems that have value to both humans and nature. Ecological engineering combines basic and applied science for the restoration, design, and construction of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The goals of ecological engineering are (1) the restoration of ecosystems that have been substantially disturbed by human activities such as environmental pollution or land disturbance, and (2) the development of new sustainable ecosystems that have both human and ecological value.
