본문내용
Ecology researchers went to Herring Creek, Charles City County, Virginia to sample macroinvertebrates in two in-stream habitats, riffle and pool areas, to test and see how the species diversity is related to water quality of Herring Creek. Total number of 178 macroinvertebrates of 11 species was sampled at riffle habitats and total number of 100 macroinvertebrates of 8 species was sampled at pool habitats. With this data, using Shannon Index method, species diversity of each habitat was calculated with formula, H’= - Σ (pi log pi), where H’ representing the index and pi the proportion of the number of individuals belonging to a species i. The Shannon Index came out as 1.37 for riffle community and 1.73 for pool community. The hypothesis of this study was that riffle habitats of Herring Creek would have better quality of water than pool habitats if riffle habitats had the high number of the pollution-sensitive species. The hypothesis of this study was accepted from the result.
