This study aims to identify the nature of experiences of school violence. To this end, we conducted in-depth interviews of 13 students who had experiences of suffering from school violence. We used ethnography for the analysis of qualitative data. Our study derived four dimensions and 12 categories of the experiences of school violence. The four dimensions are 1) the pyramid structure of violence, 2) power hierarchy among students, 3) the harmful effects of School violence 4) competitive school environment, and 5) deep-rooted violent culture and materialism. The study found that violent hierarchy is created in the school environment that is characterized by the lack of character/moral education and intense competition for college entrance, leading to the collapse of peer relationship and reproducing violence. As such, we found that school violence is a structural issue, rather than an individual’s pathological one. Based on this result, we presented our recommendations on the prevention and resolution of school violence.영어 초록
