초록

21세기는 “e-시대”로 시작을 하였다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.e-commerce, e-business, e-solutions, e-Learning 등, 근래에 들어 접두어 "e"를 자주 접하게 된다. 이러한 “e-와 동반되는 용어가 바로 웹(web)과 넷(net)이다. 이 웹과 넷을 통해 많은 사랑들이 빠르고, 싸고, 쉽게 커뮤니케이션을 하거나 정보를 검색, 교환하게 되었으며, 이 웹과 넷을 이용하여 교육에서도 효과성과 효율성을 증진시키려는 시도가 진행되고 있다. 그렇다면 e-learning이란 과연 교수(instruction)의 질을 향상시켜 줄 수 있으며 학습 효과를 증진시켜 줄 수 있는 것인가? 연구 결과가 기대나 가설을 뒷받침해 주고 있는 것언가?Clark(1983)은 “매체는 교수를 전달하는 수만에 불과하며， 학습 성취애는 영향을 주지못한다”고 주장하였다. Clark에 의하면 학습에 영향올 주는 것은 바로 “내용” 매체에 담겨진 “내용”과 “방법”이다. 따라서 교수-학습시 매체 사용은 학습의 효과성보다는 비용과 전달 범위에서 우세하다는 것이다. 한펀 Kozma는 “매체와 방법은 셔로 필요 불가결한 관계에 있다"고 주장한다. 따라서 “매체와 방법 모두 학습에 영향을 주며 매체와 방법이 서로 영향을 주기도 한다"고 덧붙인다.Clark은 분명 교육공학에 종사하는 사랍이나 연구자들에게 간과할 수 없는 문제를 제기 하였다. Clark이 논문을 발표 한 후 14년 간 “매체와 방법”에 관한 지상 논쟁은 여러 사람에 의해 계속되어 왔지만 결국은 Clark과 Kozma의 대결로 귀결된다. 교육공학의 건전한 발전을 위하여서는 Clark의 주장을 하나의 주장으로, 경고로 받아들이고 이를 바탕으로 Kozma의 주장올 실현 및 구현한다면 가장 이상적인 학습이 이루어지라라 생각되며, 그렇게 되기 위하여서는 심도있는 연구가 수반되어져야 할 것이다.

In 1983, Richard Qark evoke:! considerable controversy in the e:!ucational technologyfield with the publication of his article, "Reconsidering research on learning from me:!ia."Oark challenged that media are delivery vehicles for instruction and do not directly influencelearning. He aloo mentioned that me:!ia comparioon studies, regardless of the mediaemployed, tend to result in "no significant difference" conclusions. There is evidence that itis the method of instruction that leads more directly and powerfully to learning. Therefore,we should study "attributes" of media and their influence on the way that information isprocessed in learning. In the ensuing years, 1his 􀂒ue has remained highly provocative anda exmtinual subject of demte. Several positions presented in the past 14 years on mediaand learning show bo1h increased oophistication in the debate on me::lia influences and diversityin points of view. However, it roils down to the two majlr debaters: Oark andK01lTla. Robert Kozma, in his refute to Clark, state::l that capabilities of a particular medium,in conjunction with methods that take advantage of these capabilities, interact with andinfluence the ways learners represent and process information and may result in a more ordifferent learning when one medium is compared to another for certain learners and tasks.Clark argue::l that method is different from me::lium while Kozma insiste::l that the separationof me::lia from method creates an urmecessa.ry and undesirable schism between thetwo. Media and method should have a more integral relationship. Both are part of the instructionaldesign.My position as a researcher of the del:ate on influences of me::lia is not one of yes orno, but rather taking Clark's view as a "stop" sign in adopting a new medium in an educationalsetting. He made us stop and think before we move to employ a new medium.Why are we going to use this new medium? Is there any other medium that can bring thesame result or effect? What do we expect from this new medium? On the basis of thesefundamental questions in our mind, we can plan, design, develop, and implement a new medium in our edu::ational oolting with efficiency and effim.cy. Komt.a's view will cer1ainLycontribute in the stage of design and development Ko:i'IIlli is saying that media comprise aseparate independent variable that can 00 found to profoundly influence learning. And, ifthe media are well controlled and/or employed, they can result in improved learning overconventional fonTIS of cla$room teaching.
